The way patients can access Out Of Hours care has changed. If you require urgent medical attention between the hours of 6.30 p.m. until 8 am every day and on Bank Holidays and weekends, the NHS 111 Wales service provides urgent care.
When it's urgent, but NOT life threatening, urgent Medical advice can be accessed outside normal surgery hours by calling the 111, or by visiting their website: https://111.wales.nhs.uk/
How does it work?
You answer questions about your symptoms on the website, or by speaking to a fully trained adviser on the phone. Depending on the situation you will:
- find out what local service can help you
- be connected to a nurse, emergency dentist, pharmacist or GP
- be given an arrival time if you need to go to A&E – this might mean you spend less time in A&E
- be told how to get any medicine you need
- get self-care advice
- get a face-to-face appointment if you need one
If necessary, you will be asked to attend the one of the Out of Hours centres e.g. Barry Hospital, Cardiff Royal Infirmary or University Hospital of Wales to be seen for an examination or assessment.
If you are experiencing a LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY, such as severe bleeding, collapse, severe chest pains or unconsciousness, then call 999 immediately.
